THE ZOO _1: JESSE VISSER

A blend of research, craftsmanship, and curiosity, leading to candid and clean projects (The Netherlands)

THE ZOO

Jesse Visser is one of the 13 designers selected for ZOO’s inaugural temporary exhibition.

ZOO _Hub spaces are concept stores and galleries, serving as a global showcase capable of narrating untold stories. Periodically, the ZOO team will curate exhibitions and collectives that traverse the broad discourse surrounding contemporary design.

Beacon of light

Glass, rope, and stone

Beacon of Light reflects the search for “wandering and holding on.” Like an anchor in the mist.

A boulder holds a sandblasted glass sphere balanced by a minimalist custom-made pulley.

Creating tranquility in form and content.

Each beacon of light is given its own unique boulder.

Harold cabinet

Iron

The Harold cabinet is a dynamic design made out of expanded metal.

Its metal grids and clean outline distinguish the Harold from other cabinets.

While walking around the Harold you will notice it’s the moiré pattern, created by these grids, that makes it so intriguing to observe.

The effect of the pattern varies by distance and point of view, and because of that you will never look at the same cabinet twice.

Who is Jesse Visser

Jesse Visser Designprojects was founded by Jesse Visser in 2000. After finishing his studies at the Utrecht School of Product Design and the Piet Zwart Institute, Visser focused on creating furniture and lighting objects that go beyond the predictable. Up to this day, his approach is defined by research, craftsmanship and curiosity, leading to outspoken designs that are appreciated by clients such as galleries and architects, business and the industry alike.

“Jesse Visser Designprojects specializes in furniture and lighting objects that engage all the senses. Our desire to innovate production techniques and love for detailing, result in striking statement pieces that are as sober as they are poetic.”

THE ZOO _1: GIUSEPPE AREZZI

A research that gives life to contemporary products and spaces (Italy).

THE ZOO

Giuseppe Arezzi is one of the 13 designers selected for ZOO’s inaugural temporary exhibition.

MANICO

Solid beech wood, a blend of organic linen and cotton fabric, and leather straps.

“I decided to tell the story of the transition from traditional agriculture – which used manual tools such as hoes and rakes – to contemporary agriculture, which makes use of increasingly sophisticated agricultural machinery.

The Manico armchair, built with the handles of tools that are no longer used, is now the new chair of the farmer who’s cooling off, under an olive tree, looking out at the machines that work for him: an ode to simple, authentic Sicilian culture.” G. A.

The collaboration between It’s Great Design and the designer Giuseppe Arezzi (Binomio 2019, Tramoggia 2020, Carruba 2021) gives life to the new Manico armchair.

Manico was born from a research project linked to the vernacular tradition and became an ergonomic product stripped of superfluous details.

Characterized by its lightness and transparency, Manico is made with a minimum use of material and is handcrafted in Italy.

This armchair is a “self-produced” project, it is completely disassemblable and is made out of solid beechwood broomsticks, glossy canvas, and leather straps.

Who is Giuseppe Arezzi

Giuseppe Arezzi’s works in both conceptual and commercial environments, collaborating with international institutions, galleries, brands, and private clients. Giuseppe’s research — inextricable from his personal experiences and his origins — gives life to contemporary products and spaces, with a transformative, multifunctional vision.

His interest in vintage functional archetypes manifests itself both in contemporary reinterpretations and in the design of custom-made objects and spaces. Giuseppe’s design code varies according to his clients’ needs, combining a global outlook with a local aesthetic vision.

THE ZOO _1: NAVET

A multidisciplinary collective that explores materials, craftsmanship, and spaces through shapes, functions, and colors (Sweden and Italy).

THE ZOO

NAVET is part of ZOO’s inaugural temporary exhibition.

ZOO _Hub spaces are concept stores and galleries, serving as a global showcase capable of narrating untold stories. Periodically, the ZOO team will curate exhibitions and collectives that traverse the broad discourse surrounding contemporary design.

H Table

Sycamore, beech, Legad finish with natural oil

H Table is named after its H shaped base, it was created as a part of the NAVET Sketches collection, where an imaginary bistro was set up within the designers’ studio gallery.

The chosen materials contrast with each other, with the painted enamel surface enriched by various textures. The result is a durable object that also engages the sense of touch, making each piece unique.

Jelly mirror and Canna Candlestick

Glass

The Jelly Mirror designed by NAVET is manufactured in recycled glass at a women-owned foundry that operates on waste gas outside of Stockholm.

Exploring and challenging traditional craft, this is NAVET’s latest inclusion to their collection of open edition handmade artisan glass objects.

Their latest series of open edition glassware takes inspiration from the Swedish tradition of glassmaking in the countryside where they grew up, as well as the ancient tradition of Murano.

The objects, including vessels, bubbles, candleholders and now mirrors, are designed and crafted between Stockholm and Murano.

About NAVET

NAVET is a multidisciplinary design collective founded by Maria Johansson, Lina Huring, Cecilia Wahlberg and Helena Svensson. Their work spans from creative direction to spatial design and objects, and sometimes things in between. They explore material, manufacturing and spaces to create a body of work that celebrates form, functionality and color. NAVET has developed a collaborative work process where strict limitations are set early, then continuously questioned and challenged throughout the design process. Artisan serial production is continuously explored by the group, both as producers and as designers for collaborating with brands. Spaces and objects are long-lasting and always done in close collaboration with makers and users.

THE ZOO _1: IL SEDICENTE MORADI

A direct dialogue with nature, embracing the philosophy of street art (Italy)

THE ZOO

Il Sedicente Moradi is one of the 13 designers selected for ZOO’s inaugural temporary exhibition.

“La Sedia Sospesa”

Iron, steel cable, bark

We could define this drawing as that ensemble of ideal lines, structural or decorative, which renders an object recognizable and comprehensible.

Whether these lines are added, as in a baroque piece of furniture, or subtracted, as in a minimalist painting, there is one essential and invisible line to which everything is subjected: the barycenter.

The center of gravity is the internal axis which supports balance and makes functionality and sustainability possible. It is a single line which oscillates around a single center, thus becoming structure.

The experiment of the Suspended Chair is an elaboration of a study on the balance of forces. It is as simple as it is fascinating: two identical linear forms, similar to a fork, mirror each other, one above the other, and are suspended by fine wires.

By putting these forms in tension, a strong and stable equilibrium is created. It is baffling to the viewer: the aesthetic lines have almost disappeared, underscoring the single invisible line without which there would be no structure.

Rather than a finished physical object, this chair provides a keyhole through which to view and perceive the forces of physics.

Who is Il Sedicente Moradi

Born in Florence in 1980, Sedicente Moradi studied graphics for advertising and illustration. He later continued his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, with a concentration on painting. Through studying and experimenting with the theme of landscapes in art, from 2010 Moradi gradually abandoned painting to establish a more direct dialogue with nature and what it inspires. He embraced the philosophy of street art, to reduce the distance between his art and its viewers.

Wood is the medium through which his creatures commune with their environment. They are familiar, recognizable figures which interact with the landscape and its inhabitants. Moradi’s installations are usually set in places that he is well-acquainted with and whose environment he studies and understands. Just a few tools are needed for Moradi to establish a connection with the space. He currently lives in Florence.

Various collections

Handcrafted stoneware and ceramics

Project 213A is a European design house founded in 2020 as an idea by four friends linked by a common design philosophy. This Project became reality with the launch in September 2021.

The brand’s goal is to create modern as well as unique furniture and home accessories that are timeless with a commitment to work towards a more sustainable future.

The name of the brand “Project 213A” refers to a London based address where all four founders each have lived in – at different times throughout their studies.

The building is featured prominently within the logo where their home stood, above a launderette.

About Project 213A

Each object is responsibly produced in carefully selected Portuguese manufactures and family-run workshops, ensuring a mindful production process and minimizing harmful environmental practices. The project’s logo specifically represents the building where their home was located, situated above a coin-operated laundry.

THE ZOO _1: ROBERTO SIRONI

A work that breaks away from its primary function, blurring the boundary between functional object and sculpture. (Italy)

Antropico Entropico

Wool, bamboo silk, and hemp

The planet’s surface is detected by satellites that travel 600 kilometers high above the earth and to which it takes about two days to cover the entire earth’s surface, immortalizing even details up to the size of about ten centimeters. Visualization software such as Google Earth integrates the images produced by the different satellites allowing the bird’s-eye observation of the terrestrial landscape, from which an extensive anthropization of ecosystems emerges as a constant.

Unnatural geometries with synthetic colors, artificial borders that clearly dissect natural landscapes, rivers that disappear in huge dams and forests consumed by cultivated fields draw the anthropic landscape, mixing natural and artificial elements.

Antropico Entropico is a triptych of carpets that interprets the graphic elements extrapolated from satellite images, which are decomposed and reassembled according to an entropic, disordered principle. This action of deconstruction and reworking generates a new landscape – imaginary and therefore counterfeit – a textile papier collé, a collage of overlapping elements in which colors and shapes mix by stratifying, creating three-dimensional landscapes, impossible islands, cartographic visions.

Each carpet is produced in only 3 pieces.

Who is Roberto Sironi

Roberto Sironi (1983) is an Italian designer, who lives and works in Milan. His design practice is defined by a research-based and process-oriented approach, where thinking and making converge in the creation of artifacts, which are considered narrative tools to trigger a dialogue with the user.

This approach materializes through a body of work that breaks with the primary function by blurring the boundary between functional object and sculpture; the artifacts produced are the result of a process in which the subjects addressed are investigated through an

in-depth analysis from a historical, geographical and anthropological point of view. The works are conceived as contemporary ultra-signs, where the transformation processes re-signify the matter, revealing its unseen qualities and giving it new features.

Tagadà

Plastic and wood

Whoever has taken a spin on a Tagadá (a classic amusement park ride) knows that it’s not actually all fun and games: the ride is loud, brightly lit, and often dangerous because of its reckless occupants.

This rotating contraption — no vintage amusement park was complete without one! — lives on in the memories of those who grew to adulthood challenging its centripetal force.

Fittingly, the Tagadá collection packs a colorful and playful punch, yet it is not a joke. Simple yet surprising, carefree yet serious, each piece is the result of years of conceptual research and artisanal mastery.

THE ZOO _1: OLDER

Wide eye, wake up

Nylon and elastic

For the WIDE EYE exhibition, OLDER and Danish artist Alexander Vinther have created a series of works that reflect a playful devotion to contemporary design and its many branches.

The WIDE EYE WAKE UP sofa is a nylon piece consisting of three individual chairs held together as a single sofa by elastic bands, which can be reconfigured to use the chairs separately or in a combination.

It is a mattress system, inspired by the challenge to pattern cut a sofa as if it were a garment, and drawing upon OLDER’s extensive experience in the ateliers. WIDE EYE WAKE UP balances the Italian and Danish background of the trio, as the Italian tradition for big, soft furniture is mixed with the tall, clean structure but also as a sofa or combined seating or three individual office chairs.

WIDE EYE WAKE UP is not politely reserved or elegantly refined, and that is exactly the point: it is meant to provoke the general idea of what good taste is within contemporary design, to “wake up” the viewer into “wide-eyed” curiosity within their core context of the European design scene.

About OLDER

Da un’idea di Letizia Caramia e Morten Thuesen, nasce OLDER, un’azienda di design italo-danese specializzata in uniformi sostenibili. Roseaux Collection

Sycamore, beech, natural oil finish

“As you meander through the marshes, allow yourself to be carried by the movement of the reeds and their luminous softness.”

Like a curtain of reeds, the cadence created by the beech stems allows light to permeate, softening the surface in a rhythmic manner.

This collection explores the visual sensations created by reeds as light filters through them. The juxtaposition of full and empty and high and low is designed to remind us of a reed bed. The color of the wood creates a contrast between light and dark, in order to better illuminate the pieces of furniture.

Bettoïa Collection

Smoked ash wood

“Flowers invite themselves inside, the stem reveals itself, the meadow takes shape.”

A wooden vase with soft and elegant lines, a soothing object, whose function is to bring nature inside our living spaces. This purpose responds to a growing need to reconnect with nature, represented here by dried flowers.

Bettoia is the name of the designer’s great-grandmother, to whom he wanted to pay tribute with the first object in his collection. Wooden vases are beautiful objects, but how can the grace of glass vases be replicated? By rendering visible the entirety of the natural element, sublimating it from petal to root? This was the thought process that inspired Alexandre when he envisioned Bettoia

Who is Alexandre Labruyère

Alexandre Labruyère is a designer of contemporary furniture and decorative objects. After several years working in a large industrial sports company, in 2019 he began training at the Ecole Boulle in Paris to become a cabinetmaker. Labruyère’s studies have enabled him to approach many materials with the techniques necessary to give life to his ideas and concepts. Drawing inspiration from his extensive travels and meetings with people, Labruyère’s work revolves around three fundamental axes: tension, lightness and simplicity. The search for a taut but fluid line guides his designs, which are enhanced by contrasting colors. Labruyère’s universe is imbued with a familiar aesthetic: we are not faced with objects that confuse or disturb us. Rather, their function is to consolidate our interior world, calling upon memories of timeless forms.

THE ZOO _1: ANTONIO MASSARUTTO

Nature, art, technique, and instinct (Italy)

THE ZOO

Antonio Massarutto is one of the 13 designers selected for ZOO’s inaugural temporary exhibition.

Ero un pollaio

Metal chicken wire, acrylic

“Take life lightly. Lightness is not the same as being superficial: it is better to glide over things from above rather than bearing the world’s burdens” (Italo Calvino, Lezioni americane, 1988)

“Il faut etre léger comme l’oiseau, et non comme la plume” (Paul Valéry)

Massarutto uses chicken wire like charcoal to create layers of light and shadow, chiaroscuro, transparent areas and intensely colored areas. This work bespeaks lightness. Ironically, the sculptor represents the might and weight of the animals through an extraordinarily delicate material. Massarutto’s creatures are so light they are able to climb walls.

Bestiarium Collection

Solid bronze

Antonio Massarutto’s jewels are miniature, wearable sculptures. The animal world, a theme the artist explores, is also represented in his jewelry: wolves and wild boars are transformed into ornamental elements. At first, the sculptor creates his models using a 3D printer and afterwards employs the lost-wax casting technique to create jewels in solid bronze.

Who is Antonio Massarutto

Antonio Massarutto was born in Pordenone and grew up in the Friulian countryside. His family was deeply connected to the animal world. His father was a taxidermist and, from a young age, Massarutto assisted him as he worked in the laboratory. This experience provided him with a precocious knowledge of anatomy which continues to influence his art. Early in his career, Massarutto worked in the automotive sector designing car interiors. It was during this time that an event took place that would change the course of his life. While on holiday in Tuscany with friends, Massarutto was walking through an oak and chestnut tree forest when, looking up, he experienced what he describes as “a mystical encounter with something I couldnʼt define.” After this life-changing moment, Massarutto decided to move to the ancient region of Tuscany, freeing himself from the corporate environment that he found so suffocating. His jewels are “miniature sculptures of the natural world.” Massarutto has also created large-scale sculptures on the same theme, using organic materials such as terracotta, wood and marble. He experiments with reclaimed materials such as wire, metal mesh, plastic and fabric. Today, Massaruttoʼs work relies heavily on improvisation and instinct, similar to his favorite musical genre, Jazz: “My works are improvisations composed of very specific mental structures and techniques. In the way that a jazz player never repeats themselves, each time, I add something new. I give my sculptures the possibility to renew themselves continuously. The only constant I hold in mind is the soul of the animal I am creating. They are not reproductions, they are vital. This is my art”.

THE ZOO_1: PRIMA ESPOSIZIONE COLLETTIVA A ZOO_Hub

ZOO_Hub hosts its first temporary exhibition, THE ZOO_1, with a focus on designers and their vision of the contemporary: a selection of objects, furniture and lighting which ranges from pure conceptual research to functional and formal synthesis. The protagonists of this exclusive multi-artist exhibition are works by:

The exhibited projects have been chosen by the authors themselves, among the many at their disposal. Each of them represents a personal and creative journey made of experiences, insights, memories, and innovation, with a particular focus on the environment, its forms, and its well-being. From objects to furniture, there are no precise boundaries; limits are dictated only by imagination. The setup provides an experiential journey within the space, where the objects become protagonists of a broader experience.
